China Camp Paint Out

Our Watercolor Journaling Group headed on out the San Pedro peninsula to spend the morning at China Camp State Park which is on San Francisco Bay. It was a simply beautiful fall day... plenty of sunshine but not too hot.

China Camp is filled with historic relics such as this old boat. If you are observant, you will notice my date is wrong. Once again, the right brain got into how the date looks rather than remembering that, indeed it is October, not September.

Several kayakers showed up to start their paddle around the Bay. I took this photo as Jeannie was painting and our bird watcher, Phyllis was checking into the painting progress so far.

Miriam stood by the old boat that both of us painted in our journals today.

We were fascinated by this old boiler that was putting steam into a box. Our curiosity led us into an old barn where we found a group of enthusiastic boat builders recreating an original fishing boat using the same techniques as the old timers used. The box with the steam going into it had a board that they were softening so it could be bent.

We watched them remove it and then literally, run with it into the shop for the next steps.

Here are two workers discussing their projects.

And here is the boat. It is been in progress for over a year and they estimate it will be another year before it is complete. The men were very gracious with us, explaining what they were doing and showing us all around. I am so pleased that we got to see them open the board steaming box and then to watch them dash into the shop to get the board bent and clamped into the right position. This is an old art that they are reviving for all of us to enjoy and learn.
